Some confusion out there… happy to resolve.

We’ll be launching on Sky (channel 0202), DAB and online on Monday, 6th October at 7pm.

We will be broadcasting on the following DAB multiplexes:

London: CE Digital Block 12C (replaces Real Radio at 128kbps)
South Wales & Severn Estuary: MXR Digital Block 12C (replaces Smooth Radio at 128kbps)
West Midlands: MXR Digital Block 12A (replaces Real Radio at 128kbps)
North-West: MXR Digital Block 12C (replaces Real Radio at 128kbps)
Glasgow: Score Digital Block 11D (replaces jazzfm.com at 128kbps)

Online at jazzfm.com.

We will be available on the Freesat EPG from late October. Clever folk with a screwdriver may be able to find us on a FTA satellite receiver beforehand…

Just checked (shortly after 07:00 this morning) and ‘Jazz FM’ is n ow available via Sky Digital channel 0202, though still with the previous occupier’s programme info.

Will I be able to pick up JazzFM through the Internet Tuner application on an iPod touch? I use my iPod touch on home wireless network and this is connected to Creative Labs Xdock which transmits wireless audio throughout the house so I can pick up the same music in other rooms in the house. I can do some figuring out once you’re up and running but any pointers on URLs in advance will help.

Hi Graeme – not sure – the URLs are for Windows Media and AAC+ encoding. If either of those work on the iPod touch, then great! Otherwise I’ll do some research and come back on this.

Hi Graeme & all,

I’ve just put the URL into an excellent freebie Internet radio player on my iPhone 3G and can get the stream Ok – but, even with the buffer set to large, the playback is stuttery.

I don’t know enough about AAC+ to know whether this is the problem. Anyone any ideas?

Me again,

I should have said that the Internet radio app I’m using is called FStream – and it’s available as a free download from the Apple ‘App Store’ accessible from the icon menu on iPhone 3Gs and (I guess) iPods.

Richard/Graeme – I don’t have any experience with AAC+ streams on an iPhone but if you do find out something about the way in which we’re delivering it that creates the problem, do let me know. We may be able to arrange for a separate stream specifically for the iPhone – there is a plan to have a developer look at creating a Jazz FM application but this is only at planning stage at present.

Once you’re transmitting next week I’ll take a dig into it and figure it out (I’m a pretty technical guy so I’m sure if it can be done I’ll find it). If I find the answer I’ll post back. I have a freesat tuner so worst case I’ll wait until end of October and tune in through this instead. I pickup sky.fm smooth jazz and U.S. smoothjazz stations through the iPod Internet Tuner app, they’re auto listed in the Jazz genre.

Thank you Richard for your iPhone solution – it works fine on my iPhone 3G! This after failing with the following apps from the iPhone App Store: allRadio from VISUAmobile, FlyCast, Radiolicious, and Tuner … I got messages like “stream connection failed!” Furthermore, I can connect my iPhone to my Phillips WAC3500 home stereo unit and it plays fine in surround sound! So now I have Jazz FM in the kitchen. Pure bliss!

So others can follow suit, here is a step by step guide:
– open the App Store on your iPhone (or iTunes)
– search for FStream & download it
– click on Favourites, Edit, & Add new webradio
– enter the name Jazz FM, the URL is http://stream.jazzfm.com:8000/listen.pls
– the format is AAC+ ; and the Bitrate is 64 kbs
– then click on Play, click on Jazz FM, and listen !

And if your home stereo unit has an iPod connection, it should be possible to play Jazz FM via FStream through your home stereo unit.

I don’t know if something similar would work with an iPod … any suggestions?

Fstream is a great app, isn’t it. finally made the switch to iPhone & find that it doesn’t work with the FM tuners by Apple and others. Grrr.
Now I can get JazzFM and Radio 4. Thanks guys
